Davenport Florida is a quiet small town neighbor of Disney World, placed just off the beaten path, situated along US 17, and just east of US 27.  As you will see by visiting The City of Davenport Florida Chamber, Davenport has remained largely unchanged by the impact of world-size tourism just to the north. The rolling hills of the Lake Wales Ridge, stretching south for about 100 miles from this point in northeast Polk, provide an idyllic setting for the town of Davenport. Only two square miles in size, and with a population of less than 2,000, Davenport is nonetheless in the center of a booming residential area. The rapid expansion of the Disney complex just to the north, coupled with thousands of vacant acres of land formerly used for citrus production, have drawn dozens of new subdivisions to the area. Winter Haven is surrounded by 23 fresh water lakes, which either touch or are contained within the City limits.  14 of the lakes, and growing,  are connected by a system of navigable canals.  The Winter Haven Chain of Lakes is a boater, fisherman's paradise!  Winter Haven is the proud site of  Theatre Winter Haven, The Polk County Fair,  and the Water Ski Museum and Hall of Fame. The college, built in the 1940's with the help of students, only had enough money to build 12 of the structures Wright designed. Most of the buildings are open to the casual visitor to the college. A walking tour of the campus includes the only planetarium Wright ever designed as well as small but splendid chapels.  Polk County 's historic districts offer a glimpse of the past. Lakeland's Munn Park boasts the largest collection of antiques in the area with more than 60 independently owned shops housed in restored buildings dating back to the early 1900's. Antique districts can also be found in Lake Alfred, Winter Haven, Lake Wales, Bartow, Frostproof, Haines City and Davenport Florida.

A little off the beaten track in Mulberry Florida, you can travel to The Mulberry Florida Chamber of Commerce  and see an exceptional collection of more than 3,000 petrified fossils, ranging from the skulls of a rare three-toed horse and six-horned antelope to an 18-foot skeleton of a 10 million year old Baleen whale. Mulberry is not only the "Phosphate Capital of the World," but also Florida's 'Bone Valley' where these creatures lived and died millions of years ago before they were found in the area during commercial digging for phosphate.

While in Mulberry, don't miss the City Lights/Cypress Nights in Bartow Florida during the Christmas season!  Recognized by the American Bus Association as one of the top 100 events in North America, this initiative is a countywide tourism and Christmas decoration program to attract tourists to Polk County with its grand light displays and holiday celebrations. Sponsored by the Central Florida Visitors and Convention Bureau and area Chambers of Commerce, this program attracts hundreds of buses loaded with visitors to the area.   Each participating city has a specific theme and Bartow Florida is known as the "The City of Nostalgia". A true high point in any visit to Polk County is a trip to Lake Wales Florida and  Historic Bok Tower Gardens just north of The Lake Wales Chamber of Commerce, in Lake Wales Florida. Built on the highest point in peninsular Florida, Bok Tower, a National Landmark  is one of the state's most famous and beautiful landmarks. Although its place in the Central Florida landscape is well known, its unique structure and beautiful gardens are less familiar. The carillon houses 57 bronze bells which range in weight from 17 pounds to 12 tons which ring out daily recitals across the hills of Central Florida. What a homey feeling visitors have when they walk through the doors of the cracker syle house. Take a few minutes to walk through the gift shop. One of Florida's best-known free attractions is Spook Hill, in Lake Wales. Spook Hill is located just a few blocks from the National Historic District.  This mystery of nature attracts many thousands of visitors each year.

A tiny town tucked between Clinch Lake and Lake Reedy in the south east corner of Polk County, in the central portion of Florida is Frostproof Florida. As you will see by visiting the City of Frostproof Florida This area is known as part of the ridge, a series of long, slow rolling hills of various types of sand, limestone, lakes and creeks. Natural history for the area shows the center of Florida was once a long sand bar that grew into rolling sand dunes and over millions of years became the Florida we know today. Evidence of white beach sand can still be seen in what are called scrub islands, patches of land, undisturbed by development, that have plant and animal life found no where else on Earth. The east side of Frostproof is sheltered by 26,000 acres of the Lake Wales Ridge State Forest. To the north and east of the city is The Nature Conservancy's Tiger Creek Preserve, another 4,805 acres of protected lands. Longleaf pine forest, scrub oak islands, oak hammocks with stands of cypress and lob-lolly bays in the wetter areas, with tannin water creeks and lakes make up most of this preserved land which consists of The Nature Conservancy, Lake Wales Ridge Program and Lake Wales Ridge State Forest.

Polk County's Green Swamp offers an ecosystem with few intrusions from the industrialized world, leaving the habitat truly natural and undisturbed. Within Green Swamp, visitors can canoe and fish in the headwaters of five rivers, bike along abandoned railroad corridors -- including the 28-mile long Polk County Rail Trail that passes through the swamp -- or simply marvel at the spectacular natural beauty of this rare habitat. The swamp is the wintering ground for numerous migratory birds and even panthers have been spotted on occasion.
